European Business Tour 2021 - Case Study and Debate
Due to Covid-19 the 2021 European Business Tour was cancelled. In replacment of the Tour, a former TIL student, Menno Van Der Kamp working for Lufthansa and his counterpart from KLM, provided practical tips to start working abroad. They also hosted a debate whether the participants worked on a practical challenge with airline tax policies and presented their pitches.
European Business Tour 2020 - Lisbon
During February 2nd to 9th, 26 of our student members visited Lisbon as part of the European Business Tour 2020. During the tour, students had the opportunity to visit and know about various companies and government entities who work in the domain of transportation in Lisbon. Carris, Port of Lisbon, Metropolitan authority of Lisbon, TIS - Consultores em Transportes, Inovação e Sistemas, Deloitte Portugal, Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and SISCOG were the companies and government entities which were visited. Alongside the visits, the sunny weather and fun activities made the tour a memorable one. We would like to specially thank Gonçalo Homem de Almeida Rodriguez Correia for joining the tour and also for his invaluable support in arranging all the visits to companies and government entities. To know more about this tour refer to Fly-Over – Volume 29 – Edition 3– April 2020 available here.
European Business Tour 2019 - Valencia
After years of cold destinations, the 2019 European Business tour went to Valencia, Spain. With a group of 26 enthusiastic TIL and T&P students we went to Valencia to learn about the transportation challenges that they are coping with. A number of interesting companies were visited, and topics from every part of the master were discussed: from port planning to traffic management and from shared bike rebalancing to disruption management in the metro system. Besides the educational, the students also used the week to learn how to make a classic paella, touch up on their karaoke skills and to make new friends.
European Business Tour 2018 - Copenhagen
European Business Tour 2016 - Hamburg
In the first week of February a group of 23 students went on the European Business Tour. After last year’s success in Istanbul, the participants this year went over to one of the main harbour cities in Europe: Hamburg! Everyone enjoyed the tour and the visits to universities, companies and some nightlife spots. The full story can be read in the April 2016 edition of the Fly Over magazine. But since we know you are curious, here is a short summary:
Visit to universities
The TUHH university and the privately financed Kühne Logistics University were both visited. We got some renewing views on their education and the research they are conducting. During the visit we got to try the new container terminal simulator and interact with the German students.
Airbus
At the tremendous Airbus plant, lots of planes are built and assembled. We were welcomed warm heartedly by one of the Board members who told us everything about the company. Thereafter, we visited some of the plant buildings where we could see the progression from scratch to the final painting of the planes! It was awesome!
Hamburg Harbour
We had a great tour by boat through the harbour which was really impressive as there was lots of activity going on: Cranes, quays and TEU everywhere! Two days after the boat tour we had a great presentation by the Hamburg Port Authority. One of the managers gave us a great presentation providing insights in the context of the harbour of Hamburg, its competitive position and their current plans to improve the hinterland connections.
DHL Express
After a great tour, we returned by plane at Schiphol Airport. To add something extra to the Tour we visited the DHL Express hub. After a nice company presentation we got a tour through the hub where we could see the live operations on the handling of Express packages. We saw the loading and unloading of the planes in just a few minutes. From there, via lots of conveyor belts all the goods get to their destination in a very short time.
Last but not least: the great nightlife!
Too many stories about the Hamburg’ nightlife but to give a short summary: we had great times at the Thai karaoke bar, got more than one drink at the 99ct bar (obviously) and had a very exclusive experience at the Hamburg Sky Bar.
