Domestic Tour 2015 - Venlo
From Thursday 19th until Saturday 21st of November Dispuut Verkeer’s Domestic Business Tour took place. The 26 participants went to the beautiful South-eastern part of The Netherlands, and even stepped over the border into Germany for a while. We visited multiple interesting companies and got acquainted with the southern style of living.
The tour started in the early morning of Thursday 19 November. With everybody on time, the first journey of the tour started smoothly. We arrived perfectly on time at TCT Venlo, where we learned about their daily operations and some facts of the terminal. Following this, LIOF – a regional investment company – took over and explained the excellent position of Venlo, being the #1 logistics hotspot in the Netherlands. After this, a tour of the rail and barge terminals followed.
The next visit, Siemens Test and Validation Center in Wegberg-Wildenrath. Stefan Meinhold, an engineer in the Mobility Division, welcomed us with lunch and an extensive presentation about their different test tracks and set-ups. The Siemens test center is the only privately owned test center in the world, enabling Siemens to include the full testing of new rolling stock in their design process. Other manufacturing companies such as Alstom and Bombardier are also welcomed to use the testing equipment fully independently, bringing their own test engineers. The test facilities include several test tracks, of which the largest is a six-kilometer-long ring that can be used at speeds up to 160 km/h. In the different construction halls we were lucky to get a sneak preview on the future London subway vehicles and Turkish high-speed trains.
That night we had a fun tour around Maastricht and in spite of the rain had a wonderful night out. We had an amazing dinner (Maastrichts zuurvlees) and then of course a visit to several cafés at the Platielstraat, drinking beers and having fun. Next morning, Abbott Vascular, an American international healthcare company with American roots. We were welcomed in Limburg style, including coffee and vlaai. A tour through their DC gave us insight in their supply chain. Soon it became clear that managing all steps within this chain, no matter how small they are, is key to its efficiency. Following this, we visited the A2 tunnel project. After a very interesting presentation we were guided through the construction site by very enthusiastic tour guides.
The tour finished with a presentation by Rijkswaterstaat on the many construction works needed currently and in the future to keep the river Meuse attractive for freight transport by barge. And in the afternoon... a visit to a Limburg vineyard. Not only did we learn about the history and origin of wine but also about the making process. Perfect ending for an amazing tour!
